Beyond the Pivot

Strategic Realignment, Diplomatic Engagement and Emerging Opportunities in Pakistan–US Relations

Prof Sajjad Khattak|Opinion|3 November 2026|18

Pak-U.S ties have witnessed significant fluctuations in diplomatic relations throughout the course of history ever since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries immediately after the former's independence in August 1947. But astoundingly enough these diplomatic relations have never been cemented through long-term diplomatic engagements and perpetual policies between the two countries but the two countries moved closer when their strategic interests converged simultaneously. Even some of the diplomatic experts and International Relations observers also hold this opinion that the relations between the two countries always hinged upon the doctrine of necessity as whenever the US needed Pakistan's support it aligned with Pakistan or else it alienated and distanced itself from Pakistan on some other occasion. Predominantly these relations have been seen with the skeptical lens by the international experts and diplomatic observers.

Following the May 2025 military confrontation between Pakistan and India, particularly Operation Bunyan-ul-Marsoos, officially referred to by Pakistan as Marka-e-Haq, the US has demonstrated renewed diplomatic engagement with Pakistan according to several diplomatic analysts. The recalibration of diplomatic relations between the United States and Pakistan is primarily driven by three considerations. Firstly, President Donald Trump publicly acknowledged Pakistan's diplomatic engagement and counterterrorism cooperation following his June 2025 meeting with Field Marshal Asim Munir. Secondly, Pakistan's diplomatic role in facilitating the June 2026 US–Iran understanding reflected its renewed diplomatic engagement in the Middle East when Pakistan stoutly advanced a role of diplomatic facilitator in the region and facilitated the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between the United States and Iran. Thirdly, Pakistan's strategic relationship with China remains an important consideration in the broader context of US–Pakistan relations realizing the fact that Sino- Pak relations are cemented to an enormous level of mutual trust and cooperation.

Pakistan–US relations have historically been shaped by shifting geopolitical priorities, strategic interests, and alternating periods of diplomatic cooperation and estrangement. Recent developments, including renewed high-level engagement, Pakistan's diplomatic role in regional affairs, and emerging opportunities for economic and security cooperation, have opened a new chapter in bilateral relations. This column examines the evolving strategic landscape of Pakistan–US relations, exploring converging regional interests, the implications of Pakistan's strategic partnership with China, and prospects for deeper cooperation in trade, technology, defence, and counterterrorism. It argues that sustained diplomatic engagement and mutually beneficial cooperation are essential to transforming renewed rapprochement into a durable and forward-looking partnership.

For most of the international diplomatic experts it is imperative to note and ruminate that the recent bonhomie and rapprochement between the two countries must lead to culminating and cementing ties in various domains and fields like investment in IT and AI industry , defence and production , software development and IT export and tech savvy entrepreneurship which offer a wide range of opportunities for the youth of Pakistan. Apart from this ,Pakistan has also got enormous potential in mines and minerals sector which can be explored by the US companies to tap the resources for the uplift of our economy that needs urgent boost in the current scenario. Furthermore, some other promising areas of cooperation between the two countries also underscore perpetual synergy in defence cooperation ,security and most significantly counterterrorism mechanism which can strengthen ties between the two countries.

It merits mention over here that today's Pakistan under the dynamic stewardship of the civil and military leaderships is more collaborative ,robust , resilient ,and committed to prosperity and progress by navigating the evolving US Pak ties that may lead to the path of perpetual peace, progress and prosperity. Keeping the precarious nature of relations between the two states ,it is the need of the hour to focus on the ever evolving canvas of Pak- US ties while redefining the axis of bilateral ties and finding the common ground for mutual economic and defence cooperation for the perpetual and unhindered progress and prosperity in the region.
